New standards in lifting technology and material handling

At crane technology manufacturer SWF, digitalization and networking are now making a powerful entrance. Intelligent control aids make work safer and easier. But there is also a fundamental innovation in rope technology.

A quarter of a century ago, the introduction of the Nova electric wire rope hoist series set new standards in the material handling systems industry. Today, Nova is synonymous with advanced, intelligent and safe load handling. The extensive scalability in performance and function gives users a decisive competitive advantage.

With the launch of the Nova2 Rope later this year, SWF Krantechnik is presenting the innovative successor model, which will initially be available for lifting capacities of up to 10 tons. Further models for different lifting capacities will follow over time. A prototype of the new model was already presented at Logimat 2024 in Stuttgart in the spring.

Innovation as tradition

The Nova2-Rope series sets new standards through the use of synthetic ropes, which enable a weight reduction of around 90 percent compared to steel ropes. This innovation makes installation and maintenance easier and opens up new possibilities in sensitive areas such as the food and chemical industries. The universal rope structure simplifies rope management as, unlike with steel ropes, the direction of winding is irrelevant. Switching from synthetic to steel wire ropes is possible at any time with minimal adjustments, which further increases the flexibility of the Nova2 Rope.

Digital transformation with networked crane solutions

Equipped with the digitally networked Omni Control hoist monitoring system, the Vario Control frequency inverter control system and intelligent electronic monitoring and control aids, SWF Krantechnik's crane solutions are ready for the digital future. Can bus technology enables efficient communication between the various components and sensors.

In addition, the new series introduces three innovative intelligent electronic monitoring and control aids that help crane operators to make work processes safer and more user-friendly. These functions are based on continuous sensor-based rope angle measurement. If the values exceed predefined limits, the control options automatically support the operator in avoiding diagonal pull and collisions. These rope angle measurement functions include

Intelligent Easy Following control aid: The operator "steers" the crane manually using the load-free hook. The crane and trolley follow independently in the desired direction.

Intelligent Easy Centering control aid: When lifting, the crane and trolley automatically center themselves directly above the load to reliably prevent diagonal pull.

Intelligent Easy Prevention control aid: the crane slows down and stops automatically if a hook, sling or load accidentally collides with or gets caught on another object.

Safety in potentially explosive atmospheres

The entire SWF Krantechnik product range is also available in explosion-proof (Ex) versions. The Ex crane components are designed for lifting capacities of up to 80 tons and cover zones 1 and 2 for gas protection and zones 21 and 22 for dust protection.

The Ex standard components are very flexible and can be quickly combined to create individual crane solutions. All Ex products comply with the highest European and international safety standards in accordance with ATEX and IECEx.

The company recently launched the explosion-proof Athlo chain Ex Zone 22 (dust protection) chain hoist, which was initially designed for loads from 160 kilograms to 1,000 kilograms. Further sizes for loads of up to 2,500 kilograms are planned. In order to meet the strict explosion protection regulations, significant modifications have been made to address the following areas:

  • Proper sealing under different environmental conditions
  • Maximum surface temperature of 120 degrees to make overheating impossible
  • Exclusion of sparking due to static electricity or other ignition methods

With the introduction of the new Athlo chain Ex electric chain hoist for Zone 2 (gas protection), SWF Krantechnik will soon be expanding its range of explosion-protected chain hoists. It is designed for lifting capacities from 320 to 2,500 kilograms. This is an in-house development that is manufactured in the company's own production facilities. The chain hoist is characterized by its compact design and is designed for ambient temperatures of up to 60 degrees Celsius. The frequency-controlled travel drives and the hoist brake, which is designed for a long service life, underline the quality and durability of this product range.

ProfileMaster Plus light crane system with new aluminum profile size

Light crane systems meet high requirements for workstations and production lines in numerous industries with load capacities of up to 2 tons. The Profile Master Plus light crane system from SWF Krantechnik consists of intelligently interlinked system components and offers profiles in different sizes made of aluminum and steel that can be easily combined. Profile Master Plus can be equipped with the company's electric chain hoists to form a complete system.

The company has also recently expanded its product range of modular lightweight aluminum crane systems by introducing a new profile size. Instead of six, it now offers eight aluminum profile types in five sizes, three of which have an internal conductor rail. The new profile size offers increased rigidity and enables larger spans to be realized.

Profile Master Plus offers versatile installation options with an optimized selection of suspensions. Different installation heights enable space-saving solutions. Various power supply types offer individual solutions for structural challenges. With Profile Master Plus AL, the lightweight crane system with aluminum profiles, joints are quickly and easily bolted together with connecting plates. Thanks to its low dead weight, the system is ideal for buildings with limited static load-bearing capacity. The system provides single and double girder solutions in hinged and rigid versions. The systems can be operated manually or with a motorized drive, and the trolleys enable easy and quiet movement during operation, ensuring precise handling of the suspended loads.
