As an owner-managed, Europe-wide specialist in corrugated and solid board packaging, Schumacher Packaging offers an extremely wide range of sizes, printing techniques and finishes. Schumacher Packaging has grown continuously in recent years through the establishment of new production facilities and the takeover of existing plants. The packaging specialist has now doubled its production and storage capacities at the plant at AirportPark FMO in Greven, North Rhine-Westphalia, which only opened in 2014. Hörmann Logistik has now expanded the existing high-bay warehouse to include a two-aisle channel warehouse.

The concept

The expansion of the automated high-bay warehouse more than doubled the existing storage capacity of the existing two-aisle channel storage system. In addition, the storage and retrieval capacity has been massively increased. The two high-bay warehouses are used both to dispose of production, which operates around the clock, and to prepare goods for dispatch. For high storage and retrieval performance, the storage and retrieval machines can pick up two pallets simultaneously for storage and retrieval.

To ensure perfectly coordinated operation of the two high-bay warehouses and to improve serviceability, the warehouse management software and stacker crane control systems installed by the previous supplier were replaced by the Hörmann Logistik warehouse management and control system HiLIS.

In addition to the high-bay warehouse, Hörmann Logistik supplied the entire conveyor technology for connecting the new high-bay warehouse and for the new dispatch provision. The expansion was carried out in several construction stages during ongoing operations and without any interruptions to operations. Hörmann Logistik's scope of supply includes rack steel construction, storage and retrieval machines, conveyor technology, control technology and the HiLIS warehouse management and control system.
