Plastic load carriers
How large load carriers improve intralogistics processes
The medium-sized company Bähren Pharma-Packaging produces more than 1.5 billion secondary packaging items every year at three sites in Mönchengladbach and Bad Dürkheim. Since 2016, the company has been using foldable plastic load carriers from the Belgian pallet manufacturer Smart-Flow to design its intralogistics processes.
In 2020, the third-generation family business with 220 employees generated a turnover of 32.1 million euros. Bähren Pharma-Packaging's products include adhesive, wet glue and sequential labels as well as leaflets and combination products. Bähren Pharma-Packaging primarily supplies the pharmaceutical industry, but also counts companies from the cosmetics and food industries among its customer base. These are sectors in which patient and customer safety are of paramount importance.
The large load carrier Tripbox and its more robust and lockable big brother Smart Sleeve Pack from Smart-Box are used for picking cardboard trays, which are manually erected, filled with package inserts and then delivered to pharmaceutical customers. The cardboard trays are erected manually at Bähren Pharma-Packaging or at the workshops of the Hephata Protestant Foundation. Around 250 Smart-Flow trip boxes are used to deliver the large folding templates and return the folded trays. The large load carriers impress with their numerous advantages: they are stable, stackable, lightweight and allow clean handling of the cardboard trays. Cleanliness and intactness of the packaging are particularly important for products for the pharmaceutical industry.
Plastic as an alternative
"We used to use large-format cardboard boxes for our internal logistics processes. However, these were often soiled and damaged during transportation and internal handling. As a result, we had to replace the boxes regularly. In our search for a sustainable alternative, we then tested three different large load carriers made of plastic. Smart-Flow's Tripbox convinced us across the board due to its stability, low weight and easy handling," says Svend Herder, Technical Manager / Authorized Signatory at Bähren Pharma-Packaging.
In addition to the trip boxes and Smart Sleeve Packs, Bähren Pharma-Packaging now also uses plastic Euro pallets. These were purchased specifically at the customer's request and are used as load carriers for transporting labels and package inserts to the customer. At Bähren Pharma-Packaging, close cooperation with customers and suppliers is part of the company's DNA. Thanks to its long company history, the medium-sized company can draw on a wealth of experience. This and the fact that the company is now run by the third generation of the Bähren family make Bähren Pharma-Packaging a valuable partner for manufacturers in the pharmaceutical industry and other sectors.
"As a family business, we benefit from short decision-making paths. This makes us more agile and allows us to respond more flexibly to our customers' wishes. We also appreciate that about Smart-Flow. The collaboration is a partnership of equals," says Svend Herder.
