Coronavirus in logistics
Lufthansa Cargo CEO welcomes simplification of official procedures
Lufthansa Cargo is doing everything in its power to keep its freighters flying during the current coronavirus crisis. "This is part of our corporate responsibility," says Peter Gerber, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Lufthansa Cargo AG. All available freighters are in operation. In addition, Lufthansa Cargo is examining the additional use of passenger aircraft for freight transport together with Deutsche Lufthansa.
The rapidly changing regulatory requirements and restrictions worldwide currently pose the greatest challenge for the cargo airline. The flight schedule is constantly being adapted to the dynamic developments. The large number of requirements increases the complexity of planning considerably. As a result, the already scarce air freight capacity is becoming even scarcer.
"Easier official procedures, particularly at our home hub in Frankfurt, can effectively reduce planning complexity in the short term. We welcome the determination of politicians to ease operational restrictions where necessary. Together, we can strengthen the security of supply by air," says Gerber. It is also important that pilots, dispatchers, aircraft maintenance personnel and air cargo handlers, for example, are not restricted in their professional activities as mission-critical employees. This also applies to upstream and downstream processes, for example in the area of air traffic control, airports, customs authorities and security checks, as well as in the area of freight delivery and collection.
Especially in emergency and crisis situations, logistics and air freight play a particularly important role in supporting global supply chains. In addition to urgent spare parts and machine parts, sensitive pharmaceuticals and fresh goods are primarily transported intercontinentally by air
