SSI Schäfer launches new FTS Weasel Lite

Easily network internal production and logistics areas and efficiently supply points of need with replenishment of small load carriers - according to the company, the new Weasel Lite automated guided vehicle system from SSI Schaefer makes this possible without complex installation. The Weasel Lite can be used flexibly across all industries, is economical and works with simple plug-and-play commissioning thanks to decentralized control.

In view of the demand for short throughput times, low inventories, optimized cycle times and high flexibility, the internal material flow is coming into focus, as it usually offers potential for optimization at more than just one point. For repetitive and standardized logistics tasks, companies often rely on automated networking of processes to ensure flexible and punctual supply to the points of demand. The limited availability of manpower is becoming a critical factor here. It is becoming increasingly difficult to reliably and consistently recruit warehouse staff for simple logistics tasks. With modern partially to fully automated solutions, such as driverless transport systems, the material flow can be efficiently structured with existing warehouse personnel without having to make large initial investments.

SSI Schaefer has developed the Weasel AGV to connect individual, highly networked work steps in warehouses and production and to supply replenishment points without large material buffers between the work areas. The new version of the proven AGV is called Weasel Lite. The addition "Lite" stands for the simple integration of the AGV into the existing premises and processes, which the companies can carry out independently - without a fleet controller, without technician know-how and without a higher-level IT installation. The AGV handles the in-house transportation of small load carriers, such as containers, cartons and similar goods weighing up to 35 kg, thus linking areas such as incoming goods, incoming goods inspection, order picking and dispatch or production and assembly. The Weasel Lite is intended to provide small and medium-sized companies in particular with a simple and cost-effective introduction to (initial) automation.

Communication via Bluetooth and tablet
The two Weasel variants differ primarily in terms of control and communication: while the classic Weasel is controlled via a fleet controller in conjunction with WLAN, the Weasel Lite AGVs communicate via Bluetooth. The latter receive the transport orders via tablet from a person at the respective point of need. Thanks to the decentralized control system, no specific IT knowledge or technical expertise is required for material flow planning or commissioning.

Plug-and-play commissioning of the "Lite" version
The Weasel Lite can be easily integrated into existing premises and processes. Only a few preparations are required: defining and preparing the route, setting up the tablet or smartphone with the corresponding app to control the AGV and switching on the vehicles. The Weasel Lite Designer is available free of charge for material flow planning, but planning can also be done using pencil and paper. The provision of IT such as servers and WLAN is not necessary due to the decentralized control.
