60 years of access technology

Katja Preydel,

Birthday party at Hymer

Hymer-Leichtmetallbau is celebrating a milestone anniversary this year. For 60 years, the medium-sized family business from Wangen in Baden-Württemberg has been developing and producing stable access technology for ergonomic and safe working at lofty heights. Over the decades, Hymer-Steigtechnik has become an established partner for industry, logistics and trade.

The production of high-quality and extremely durable access technology has been the core competence of Hymer-Leichtmetallbau for 60 years. It all began on July 1, 1962 in Wangen/Neumühle: on this day, Erwin Hymer took over the light metal ladder production branch of the once world-famous German aircraft designer Dornier.

After Erwin Hymer acquired the rights to manufacture aluminum ladders from aircraft manufacturer Dornier in 1962, he and Fritz Lang initially began production in Neumühle near Wangen. In 1970, production moved to Wangen/Käferhofen. The production area there was expanded again in 2019 to 5000 m². © Hymer

Together with Fritz Lang, he started production in Neumühle. Business was booming: just 8 years later, larger premises were needed. They finally found it in Wangen/Käferhofen - and have remained loyal to the location to this day.

The production area now extends to over 5000 m². The company is one of the largest employers in the region. The two divisions of access technology and vehicle technology employ a total of over 300 people. Then as now, owned by the founding family, Hymer is a flourishing, family-friendly company operating throughout Europe. Hymer-Steigtechnik develops and produces highly functional ladders, steps, platforms and maintenance platforms, fixed ladders, steps and work platforms as well as mobile scaffolding.

Finding the path to modernity

In 1962, Erwin Hymer's production range included "all ladder types manufactured by Dornier to date" as well as "custom-made products on request". Access technology production in the Allgäu region still follows this basic principle today. The wide-ranging portfolio includes immediately available series products as well as individually configurable access technology solutions. The popular series products include, for example, the mobile scaffolding range, which the Wangen-based company is highlighting in its anniversary year.

The mobile scaffolding range is a particular focus in the anniversary year. It includes 15 different types of rolling tower. All equipment features can be customized down to the last detail. And this with variable scaffolding heights from a manageable 1.80 to an impressive 13 meters. Telescopic stabilizers and optional safety railings ensure maximum work safety. © Hymer

For customers with very individual requirements, on the other hand, the customized special designs are of interest. The company offers a comprehensive range of advice and services for this purpose. It ranges from direct personal advice to modern digital tools such as the online configurator for fixed ladders and other access technology products from the Hymer modular system. Stairs, platforms and maintenance platforms can be configured online from a large number of standardized individual components. The configurator makes it possible to configure the modular products as a 3D model in real time.

60 years old and far from an oldie

The long-established company recently completely revamped its web and brand presence. With a fresh and open logo design in the signal color red and the slogan "Hard work made easy", the access technology professionals show that functionality, quality and safety are not just words, but real values. The "red stripe" on the spar - launched back in 1971 - remains the central trademark of the Wangen-based access technology professionals.
