Logistics as a driver of digital innovation

Martin Schrüfer,

Discover Germany's third largest economic sector on Logistics Day

On April 15, the annual "Logistics Day" offers the public the opportunity to gain an insight into logistics processes and technologies at free events. Whether it will be possible to open the doors and receive visitors in real life is questionable given the pandemic situation. But here, too, digitalization offers new possibilities with webinars, video conferences, live streams, vlogs, blogs, photos and much more.

Digital technology has long been used in logistics and supply chain management. From computers that calculated routes in many shipping companies in the 1970s, to barcode scanners for faster recording of shipment data in the 1980s, to fully networked and transparent supply chains with the use of algorithms, artificial intelligence, drones, exoskeletons or data glasses, as we see today: Logistics is one of the drivers of digital innovation, and it has to be. After all, customer requirements are constantly changing and expectations are rising with them, not only in the delivery of parcels, but also in production logistics and the associated processes and interfaces, for example.

Last but not least, studies show that digitalized companies are better able to manage crises, which is particularly relevant in logistics, which ultimately supplies society and the economy. Experts predict a total output of 268 billion euros for 2020, making logistics the third-largest economic sector in Germany. More than 3 million people are employed in logistics and supply chain management.

Companies and organizations are now using the day of action despite the pandemic to ensure greater acceptance among neighbors and politicians, to strengthen customer and employee contacts or to approach potential new employees: Anyone who is interested can take an uncomplicated, live look online at the logistical work, functions and processes they trigger in their daily lives, the role digitalization plays in this and the career opportunities on offer.

Anyone interested in learning more about the functions of logistics and supply chain management can choose an event from the program at www.tag-der-logistik.de/veranstaltungen and register free of charge. The program so far includes topics such as artificial intelligence, the future of work in logistics, automation, video technologies and sustainability. Further events will be added in the coming weeks.

Companies that do not wish to hold an event can intensify their press work on this day, draw attention to logistics with campaigns on their websites or be active on social media. This is another way of presenting the topics of the logistics sector to the public.
