Abus KranHaus brings crane technology to life

It was the Greek Archimedes who made a significant contribution to scientific work on lifting technology in ancient times. It is therefore not without reason that Archimedesstrasse in Gummersbach, Oberberg, leads to the new sales and training center of Abus Kransysteme GmbH at the top of the Sonnenberg industrial estate.

The indoor crane manufacturer Abus has christened its new exhibition and seminar center with the simple name "KranHaus". The crane manufacturer intends to welcome its customers, present products and hold training courses in the building complex, which was inaugurated in summer 2016.

In the 1,650 square meter CraneHall, the Oberberg-based company will be exhibiting over 35 fully functional overhead and light crane systems, allowing customers and interested parties to experience the benefits of the Abus portfolio for themselves. In the 800 square meter technology area, individual components of crane technology are made tangible: Here, visitors can, for example, walk on a box girder from the inside, ride in a cage on a trolley girder or control the 120-ton GM 7000 wire rope hoist themselves.

Highlight for visitors: Ride on the double girder overhead traveling crane

The highlight of the building, which extends over four floors in an open gallery design, is the walk-on double-girder overhead travelling crane, which guests can ride on at a height of eight meters to experience the feel and handling of their new crane for themselves. The crane girder also serves as a transition from the crane hall to the meeting, recreation and lounge rooms and the catering area.

Customers, interested parties and experts welcome

Abus would also like to welcome its existing customers to the KranHaus in future. The crane workshop, the new training center for seminars on the maintenance, testing and assembly of Abus cranes, has been set up on the upper floor. Theoretical and practical foundations for maintenance and service specialists can be laid here in two workshop rooms. Work islands are available for work on drives and hoists.

Abus has been building heavy-duty overhead traveling cranes at its Gummersbach site since 2011. In addition to customers and interested parties, Abus would like to address various target groups in the future and welcome them to KranHaus. This also includes experts from the industrial and commercial construction sectors as well as intralogistics. However, specialist and competence conferences for company-related sectors, school and student days and open days are also planned in order to present the company in a broad spectrum.

New in the portfolio: Intelligent crane control ABUControl

With the new ABUControl control generation, all crane parameters can be conveniently set from a laptop or tablet. It also has numerous safety and comfort features. The highlight is the pendulum damping, which prevents unwanted movements of the load. The system is based on mathematical calculations and the current measured values for speed and hook height. The crane and trolley are braked and accelerated in such a way that the travel movement counteracts the inertia-based load sway and the load hangs on the hook with virtually no movement of its own. The system promises additional safety, especially for crane operators who are only occasionally involved in load transportation in their day-to-day work.

Control from the tablet

ABUControl can be highly customized to the needs of the operator. This can be done conveniently via the KranOS software interface. The user logs on to the crane wirelessly from the ground via WLAN and can make settings for travel drives, hoists and all special functions on various clearly laid out screen pages.

Facts about the KranHaus

- 7,400 square meters of space on four floors

- KranHalle: 1,650 square meters total area 35 installed crane systems

- Technology area with eight stations that make the components of Abus technology tangible

- Experience area with numerous Abus mobile and light cranes ready to operate with various loads to try out and test

- Highlight: Walk-on double-girder overhead traveling crane at a height of 10 meters

The movement profiles can be individually selected and set for all drives. This allows the user to determine whether the crane accelerates and brakes continuously or in the traditional two-stage manner. Acceleration and braking times as well as the maximum and minimum speeds can also be adjusted here. This is ideal, for example, for adapting a new crane with ABUControl to existing systems in order to make it easier for the crane operator to switch from one hoist to another.

Numerous features in the crane control system

The new ABUControl crane control system has numerous features on board as standard. For example, all axes are frequency inverter-controlled, and if there are several wire rope hoists per crane, synchronization control of the trolleys and hoists is included. Tandem cranes can be taken into account in the design, as can complex hall profiles. ABUControl is available for all Abus overhead traveling crane types.
